Financial Structure Series Part 4 – Advanced Rule Structure

In the previous posts of the financial structure series, we have covered the basic components of the financial structure in Dynamics AX, represented with the financial dimensions, chart of account and account structure. The purpose of this article is to shed a light on another essential component of the financial structure which is the Advanced Rule Structure.

Advanced rule structure allows you to configure complex and custom rules on the financial structure which requires further financial dimensions for certain GL accounts, which basically serve the business needs in several modules in the system.

In order to understand the Advanced Rule Structure, lets consider an actual case study as derived from certain client requirements. The profit and loss accounts in general are requested to be analyzed by the following financial dimensions:

Business Line
Profit Center
Department

Although, since project management module is enabled, there are additional financial dimensions which have been created to track certain costs and revenues, which are:

Projects
Project Quotation ( custom dimension )

There are certain expense accounts related to bid bonds, tenders and occasionally travel expenses related to “Project Quotations”. Furthermore, project cost and revenue accounts requires to have additional financial dimension for “Projects”

In this essence, the account structure will state the following for any profit and loss account “P&L” which starts wither by 4, 5 or 6.

The special requirements of having additional financial dimensions on project and project quotation will be handled using the “Advance Rule Structure”

In order to create a new advanced rule structure, Go to General Ledger > Chart of Accounts > Configure Account Structure

Once the advanced rule structure is created, go to the account structure, choose the specific account structure from the list on the left, and click “Advanced Rule” from the setup pane.
